They call it an American Dream............
Sometime in November 0f 2009, I get a call from a former colleague in distress. She was at logger heads with her boss and the organisation did not offer anything much in terms of growth. It almost seemed from her conversation that everything was going wrong and she was planning to put her papers in. Like a good senior colleague, I listened patiently and empathised with her. Then there was absolute silence. I advised her to talk it out with her boss. It left me with a sense of guilt...but then I thought that was the best way out.
Then one day after about two weeks, I find her on chat mentioning that she was on a short assignment to US and that she would be there for three weeks. This was quite surprising for me. I thought she would have at least let me know that she was going to the US.Thereafter, she spoke about the possible opportunity to move to the US. I could see the pattern emerging and which is something on which I would like to dwell upon.
We go there, get to see a new country, get carried away by the lifestyles, and many other superficial delights and in a moment start imagining that we would have a great life, if we were there. Then what follows is the quick conversion of dollar to rupee, the American slang that one assumes and decides is what symbolizes civilization and sophistication.
I have seen many a minds being swayed despite the fact that the roles or jobs that they undertake in the US are far below than what they deserve. Whilst in India, they crib about the roles and career and here in a jiffy, they have gone on the other side of the fence.
I could slowly see the brittleness of the cause that we all stand for and in the greed of materialsitic gains, we sometimes accommodate what we hate the most. I respect every person for what they are and who they are and also respect them for their decisions in life...the only regret...wish we were strong on our principles....
To me anyone can emerge as a strong professional only if they are able to take a stand in life that is laced with values and principles whilst taking care not to convert trivials into principles..
